\nThe Grotto of Massabielle is bordered by the Gave de Pau<\/strong> in the north and east, and the Rock of Massabielle towers<\/strong> above it in the south.
\nIt is 9m50 deep and is the place where the Virgin appeared to Bernadette Soubirous<\/strong>, a 14-year-old girl from Lourdes, in 1858.<\/strong>
\nAt the back left of the Grotto is the Spring, which was uncovered by Bernadette following the Virgin\u2019s instructions.
\nWater from the Spring is channelled into the town\u2019s fountains, swimming pools and the water\u2019s path.<\/strong>

Firstly, imagine the scenery; you are in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park<\/strong>. There, astride the French-Spanish border, is the massif of Mont-Perdu that rises over 3,000m in altitude<\/strong>. To the south are the extraordinary canyons of Ordesa, Aniscle and Pineta. To their north, the land of cirques with the majestic Gavarnie and Troumouse<\/strong>, the greatest of all, and Estaube, the wildest.<\/div>\n

Gavarnie has long been a source of astonishment. Its reputation comes from the various explorations it has inspired. Botanists, scientists, romantics, painters, poets and mountaineers<\/strong> in search of exploits or sensations have, since the 16th century, made Gavarnie the cradle of what is known as \u2018Pyreneism\u2019.
\nThe cirque became legend when Victor Hugo, in his illustrious poem \u201cDieu\u201d, described it as an \u201cimpossible and extraordinary object\u201d, a \u201ccolosseum of nature\u201d.<\/strong><\/div>\n

To make it accessible to all, this site was laid out to respect the environment: car park, reception building, shuttles, hostels, etc.<\/p>\n

A marked path will take you to a footbridge, where you can admire the famous Pont d\u2019Espagne<\/strong>, arched above gorges where foaming torrents flow. You may then take the Gaube chair lift<\/strong> that will take you quietly to the lake.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During a short 15-minute walk<\/strong> on the level, you will see the lake appear in all the splendour of its crystalline waters. On its bank is the old hostelry where travellers stopped in the 19th century. Celebrated by French romantics and by Victor Hugo, the Gaube lake<\/strong> is dominated by the impressive silhouette of the\u00a0Vignemale<\/strong>.
